In the 1980’s and 90’s, CAD and GIS technology emerged as competitive alternatives for professionals who needed to work with spatial information that was mostly processed using the prevailing media of the time, paper. In that era, the sophistication of software and capacity of hardware limited the scope of what could be done with computer-assisted technology for drafting and for map analysis.
